Installation Actions and Scripting

Software Vendor might include in a Product Version multiple configurations or provide ability to uninstall or upgrade software. In most simple case, you would have only one Installation Action, "Install". Installation Action parameters let you specify command line parameters for Setup program (provided by Software Vendor) and select what Software Package(s) used during install.

You might want to separate image of original installation files from any custom scripts developed by you into different Software Packages. This way you can reuse the same Package with original installation files and combine it with different custom scripts packages depending on your needs.

Installation Action data will be sent to ESD Agent on all target computers and it will tell the Agent:

where to find all files required for install
what setup program to run in order to install the software and it's parameters
how to prepare before and clean-up after the install
where to put installation log
is there an answer file
special instructions, like if reboot is required after the install

The answer file gives you opportunity to provide pre-defined answers to installation programs, if required. Sometimes answer files for different computers should be slightly different. For example, in order to personalize install, it required to provide Domain Name as an answer to one of the questions. Instead of preparing multiple answer files for each of domains used in the enterprise, you can refer to inventory information field for this computer. ESD will automatically replace this special field with the value from inventory information for each computer. This feature can dramatically reduce time needed to maintain personalized answer files.
